SAS Cancelling Flights Despite Easing of Covid Restrictions

In the early phase of the corona outbreak, SAS has laid off more than 5,000 people in total, of which 200 are pilots - which is the worst in the class, says Martin Lindgren, chairman of the SAS section of the Swedish Pilot Association. In addition, 90 percent of the pilots have been furloughed which has put tremendous stress on current pilots flying when the world is opening up again.

Due to the lack of pilots, SAS has had problems manning their aircrafts which has meant that they have had to cancel some of their flights to various destinations. The reason for this is the unexpectedly long time it has taken to get the furloughed pilots back to work, says Freja Annamats, Press manager at SAS.

Despite easing covid restrictions, SAS will most likely not hire any new pilots in the coming year, which may lead to more canceled flights during the otherwise busy summer holiday period. This, however, has sparked discontent from pilots and the Swedish Pilot Association suspects that the lack of hiring of pilots in Scandinavia has something to do with SAS's strategy of growing their affiliate company SAIL in Ireland.
